Electronic System for Travel Authorization

New requirement for Visa Waiver Program for Travelers to the U.S.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), a new requirement for travel to the U.S. as part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).

Effective Jan. 12, 2009, all passengers who intend to travel to the United States without a U.S. Visa under the terms of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) must obtain an electronic preauthorization or ESTA prior to boarding a flight to the U.S. For more details on the Visa Waiver Program, a list of VWP eligible countries, and the new ESTA process, please visit the ESTA website at

Prospective VWP travelers must apply for an ESTA online through the U.S. government web site at . At this time the government does not charge for ESTA application or ESTA issuance. Applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel to the U.S., and VWP travelers are encouraged to apply for authorization as soon as they begin to plan a trip to the U.S. and no later than 72 hours before departure.

An approved ESTA travel authorization is:

  • Only accessible through application at the U.S. government website
  • Valid for up to two years or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first;
  • Valid for multiple entries into the U.S.; and
  • Not a guarantee of admissibility to the U.S. at a port of entry. ESTA approval only authorizes a traveler to board a carrier for travel to the U.S. under the VWP.

EasyCheck-in Online Now Available Worldwide

CHICAGO, August 01, 2008 - New enhancements to EasyCheck-in Online (ECO) now allow customers to check in online for all United and United Express flights worldwide, a significant step toward putting our customers more in control of their travel and helping to ease their way through the airport.

Previously, customers could use online check-in only for flights departing from the United States .

The enhancements include the ability for customers to check in via their local United sites in: Argentina , Australia , Belgium , Brazil , Canada , China , Japan , France , Germany , Guatemala , Hong Kong , Mexico , the Netherlands , Singapore and the United Kingdom . International online check-in now enables the following:

  • Economy Plus and Premium Cabin upgrade
  • Passenger information collection (e.g. passport number)
  • Upgrade awards
  • Flight changes
  • Alternate flight selection during irregular operations
  • Round-trip check-in if the return trip is within 24 hours
  • Group check-in

Some international airport authorities will not accept an ECO boarding pass for access through the security checkpoint. In those cases, ECO will still check in customers and direct them to reprint their boarding passes at the airport. In those cases, there is still a benefit to using ECO, including the ability to upgrade, purchase Economy Plus and pay service fees online, allowing more time at the airport to clear security.

Visa and passport requirements

Visa and passport requirements

Passport and visa regulations when travelling to the U.S.

U.S. Visa Waiver Program travellers, including infants and children, must present a machine-readable passport (MRP) at a U.S. port of entry to be admitted to the country without a visa. Travelers from all Visa Waiver Program countries will be required to enroll in the US-VISIT program and have their fingerprints digitally scanned and their photograph taken upon entering the U.S.A..

To obtain more information on Visa Waiver Program, please check the link below:

Important note on flights via U.S.A.

US regulations always require travelers to comply with customs and immigration procedures upon their first point of entry into the U.S.A.. This means that you will have to hold a MRP or visa upon arrival in the U.S.A., even if the country is not your final destination. You will not need to clear customs again in the U.S.A. if you have an additional stopover within the country.

Advance passenger information for travel to the U.S. is now required

U.S. legislation require foreign nationals to provide to air carriers a valid U.S. address during their stay “before” the departure of their U.S.-bound flight. U.S. citizens and U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident cardholders are exempt from this requirement.
